What's your green worth?

About

Welcome to the Whitworth’s green blog – the place where we’ll be reporting all the fantastic work we are doing to make the Gallery more environmentally sustainable.

Since 2008 we have had an ‘Environmental Champions’ group, a group of staff from all departments who meet regularly to discuss ways in which we can be more green. We worked with Global Action Plan to audit our energy use and waste and as a result we have:

  • Reduced our general waste annually by 31.5 tonnes
  • Reduced our electricity and gas use annually by 36,399kWh and 162,173kWh. – that’s  A combined annual saving of 50 tonnes of CO2.
  • Reduced our water usage annually by 155m3 annually, or 425 litres daily.

We aim to continue to make changes that will make us more environmentally friendly. You’ll hear from staff across the Gallery on this blog on subjects such as our new green roof, how we care for the collection sustainably, how we are encouraging staff to cycle to work and the exciting developments we are working on with our architects to make our new building as green as possible.
